Collection of rumours - Uchigikishu

Japanese: 打聞集 - うちぎきしゅう
Collection of rumours - Uchigikishu

A collection of Buddhist tales from the late Heian period. Only the second volume remains, making it the only remaining copy. It contains 27 tales that mainly tell of the miraculous powers of Buddhism and the deeds of famous monks in Buddhist history. It also includes brief biographical articles about Tendai monks, and excerpts from the Daikagura and Daikagura Uragaki. It may have been compiled at a Tendai temple around 1134 (Chosho 3). The signature "Eigen" on the cover may be the editor. Most of the tales are common to the Konjaku Monogatarishu, Umezawahon Kohon Setsuwashu, and Uji Shui Monogatari, and are probably quotations from the tale collection that was their ancestor, the now-lost Uji Dainagon Monogatari. It appears to have been compiled as a memorandum for sermons, and although the expressions are simple, it is significant in showing the actual way tales were used. The text is written in a mixture of katakana and katakana, including some unique kanji characters, making it useful as a source of Japanese language information.
