Japanese: 梅若万三郎 - うめわかまんざぶろう

A Noh actor in the Kanze school.

First World

(1868-1946) The eldest son of the first Umewaka Minoru. Born in Tokyo. Together with his brother Rokuro (later Minoru II), he marked the golden age of Noh known as the "Manroku period." In 1921 (Taisho 10), he established the Umewaka school with Rokuro and became its first head, but in 1933 (Showa 8), he returned to the Kanze school on his own. He reigned over the world of Noh with his natural talent and powerful, elegant performances. When the Japan Art Academy was founded in 1962, he was inducted as its first member along with supporting actor Hosho Shin. He completed all of the current plays, setting a record of 3,000 performances, including private performances. In 1946 (Showa 21), he was awarded the Order of Culture. His books include "Kido Kanwa" and "Manzaburo Geidan."

II

(1908-91) The third son of the founder. Born in Tokyo. Formerly named Mansayo. He traveled to Europe to perform Noh several times, and organized a training association with his sons Makio and Mansaharu. His younger brother Umewaka Naoyoshi (1911-72) was the fifth son of the founder and organized the Baiyukai. Umewaka Noriyoshi was his successor, and attempted new forms of European Noh performances at venues such as the Théâtre Cardin in Paris.

初世

（1868―1946）初世梅若実の長男。東京生まれ。弟の六郎（後の2世実）とともに、「万六時代」とよばれる能の黄金時代を画した。1921年（大正10）に六郎とともに梅若流を樹立し、初代の家元となったが、33年（昭和8）に観世流に単独復帰。天成の素質と迫力ある華麗な演技で能界に君臨した。37年日本芸術院創設と同時に、ワキ方の宝生新(ほうしょうしん)とともに最初の会員に推された。現行曲のすべてを完演し、非公開も含め演能3000番に及ぶ記録をたてた。46年（昭和21）文化勲章受章。著書に『亀堂閑話(きどうかんわ)』『万三郎芸談』がある。

2世

（1908―91）初世の三男。東京生まれ。前名万佐世。数度の渡欧能を実現し、子の万紀夫・万佐晴らと研能会を主催。なお、弟の梅若猶義(うめわかなおよし)（1911―72）は初世の五男で、「梅猶会(ばいゆうかい)」を主催。梅若盛義(のりよし)はその後継者で、パリ・カルダン劇場などでの新しい形の渡欧能を試みている。
