…For a while, Guangzhou was ahead in tea trade, but with the outbreak of the Taiping Rebellion, trade with Guangzhou became impossible, and in all respects, Guangzhou became China's number one international trading port. As commercial activity became more active, financial capital moved in, and the Oriental Banking Corporation (Bank of the East and Bank of the Liru) was already established in 1849, followed by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (Hui Feng Bank), which would later become the largest bank in Shanghai, in 1865 (the 4th year of the Tongzhi era). These were formed by combining with the aforementioned trading companies, and further invested in various businesses such as shipping and harbor, real estate, railways, spinning, and lumber, forming a group of related companies, becoming a huge financial capital that exerted a great influence on the Chinese economy. …
