...One of the four great monasteries of the Gelu sect located in the northern suburbs of Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It was founded in 1419 by Shakya Yeshe (1354-1435), who was invited by the Ming Emperor Yongle as a representative of Tsongkhapa and was given the title of the Great Compassionate King. It has three Buddhist philosophy training schools and one esoteric Buddhism practice training center, and has been under the direct control of the second Dalai Lama since.
