A type of clothing worn by nobles. It refers to uchiki made of twill or plain silk sewn with a kinuta (a traditional Japanese kimono). After the Kamakura period, twill sewn by board-pulling was used instead of sewn with a kinuta (a traditional Japanese kimono). Board-pulling is a stiff, shiny method of pasting in which a lacquered board is polished with wax and walnut oil, then pasted with paste, dried, and then peeled off. Uchigi is worn on sunny days, but in the court costume (twelve-layered kimono), the uchigi is worn under the outer garment and over the layered uchiki, but in the late Edo period, it was sometimes worn under the layered uchiki and over the hitoe. In men's costume, it was worn under the noshi or kariginu. In the early modern period, the uchigi (cloth worn by adults) was crimson twill, while for youth it was dark-colored (a deep shade of purple).
