Are (English spelling)

A unit of area in the metric system. It is represented by the symbol a. 100 square meters. 100 ares make up 1 hectare (1ha = 100a. h: hecto is an SI prefix meaning 100 times). The word originates from the Latin and means "a piece of flat land". In continental European countries, ares are used for farmland, and since the square meter and square kilometer recommended by the International System of Units (SI) are 1 million times apart, ares and hectares are very convenient to use, but since it is difficult to change the unit of land area, they are not popular in other countries. Hectares are recognized as a non-SI unit to be used in conjunction with the International System of Units (SI). In Japan, 1 are is almost equal to 1 bu (about 1.008 bu) and 1 hectare is almost equal to 1 chobu, so it has been adopted without resistance.

メートル法の面積の単位。記号はaで表す。100平方メートル。100アールで1ヘクタールとなる（1ha＝100a。h：ヘクトはSI接頭語の一つで100倍の意味をもつ）。語源はラテン語で「平らな土地の一画」を意味する。ヨーロッパの大陸諸国では農地に用いられており、国際単位系（SI）で推奨されている平方メートルと平方キロメートルは100万倍の開きがあるので、アールとヘクタールを用いるほうが大変便利であるが、土地面積の単位は変更が困難なため、その他の諸国では普及していない。国際単位系（SI）と併用される非SI単位として、ヘクタールが認められている。日本では、1アールがほとんど1畝(せ)（約1.008畝）にあたり、1ヘクタールがほとんど1町歩でもあるため、抵抗なく採用されている。
