Uchiumi [village] - Uchiumi

Japanese: 内海[村] - うちうみ

A village in Minamiuwa District, southern Ehime Prefecture. Population 2,659 (1995). A coastal village facing the inland sea side of the Yura Peninsula, which juts out into the southern Uwa Sea, it has little lowland and settlements are scattered at the head of small bays on the ria coast. The main settlement is Kashiwa. The village once had a population of 10,000, but in 1948 it was separated from Minami Uchiumi Village (now Mishou Town). Agriculture and fishing are the main industries, and taking advantage of the long coastline with many inlets and outlets, pearl larvae and mother oysters, as well as yellowtail tuna farming are thriving. As the sea area is little polluted, it is one of the leading producers of pearl larvae in the country, and the promotion of aquaculture is being undertaken as a measure against depopulation.

愛媛県南部，南宇和郡の村。人口2659(1995)。宇和海南部に突出した由良半島の内海側に面した海岸の村で，低地に乏しく，リアス海岸の小湾頭に集落が点在する。中心集落は柏。かつて人口1万人の村であったが，1948年南内海村(現，御荘町)を分村した。農漁業が基幹産業で，出入りに富む長い海岸線を生かして真珠稚･母貝，ハマチの養殖が盛んである。海域の汚染が少ないため，真珠稚貝採苗は全国有数の生産地で，養殖漁業の振興で過疎化対策を行っている。
