An ancient Hindu temple in Champasak Province in southern Laos. The temple stretches from the foothills to the middle of Mount Bassac, 4 km from the right bank of the Mekong River. Just before the temple, 1.5 km from the riverbank, are the remains of a four-tiered square capital city, from which a stone monument dating back to the 5th century has been excavated. This historical material suggests that the region was conquered by the Champa Kingdom or that a Cham kingdom existed. The inner sanctum of Wat Phu is thought to be the earliest structure and follows the Cham style. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
