An old town facing Mano Bay in the central part of Sado Island, Sado County, Niigata Prefecture. The main settlement, Kawarada, is the commercial and transportation center of the western half of the island. Copper utensils are a specialty of Sawane, and tobacco leaves and bulbs are produced in the sand dunes. There is the Sado Museum and a swimming beach, and the mountainous area belongs to the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. In March 2004, it merged with Ryōtsu City and the Sado County villages of Aikawa, Kanai, Niiho, Hatano, Mano, Ogi, Hamo, and Akadomari to form Sado City. 47.69 km2 . 9,909 people (2003).
