A basin in the Abashiri region in northeastern Hokkaido. It spreads out near the confluence of the Tokoro River and its tributary, the Muka River, which originates from the Ishikari Mountains and flows into the Sea of Okhotsk, with the city of Kitami located in the center. The low-level terrace surfaces distributed widely in the Tokoro River and Muka River basins, and the medium-level terrace surfaces that form gentle plateaus on both banks of the Tokoro River, are rich in soil and blessed with high summer temperatures, making them ideal agricultural land. In the 1920s, the area was converted into rice paddies, and now onions and rice are mainly cultivated there.
