…In 1514, Reuchlin published a collection of letters from prominent sympathizers as Epistolae clarorum virorum. The Unknown Letters were published to jeer the opponents' counterarguments, and to provide flank support to Reuchlin, they focused their attacks on Ortwin Gratius (c. 1480-1542), the representative of the University of Cologne. The first collection (1515) contained 48 letters, and the second collection (1517) contained 70 letters including supplements.
