Yoshimi Hundred Caves

Japanese:
Yoshimi Hundred Caves
<br /> A group of cave tombs from the late Kofun period (6th to 7th centuries) in Kitayoshimi, Yoshimi-cho, Hiki- gun , Saitama Prefecture. Also known as "Yoshimi Hyakuana." 219 cave tombs are beehive-shaped on the slopes of a hill made of tuff, with the entrances about 1m in diameter, but the interiors are often a little wider. The cave tombs have the same stone chamber structure as kofun, consisting of a gate, an entrance passage , and a burial chamber. The burial chambers are 1.5m high, 2m wide, and 2-3m deep on average, and some are equipped with a coffin seat. Many of the entrances have a stepped structure with a plate-like cover made of chlorite schist fitted into them. This allows the holes to be easily opened and closed later, and together with the multiple pedestal-like structures, it is believed to indicate that secondary burials were carried out in the same holes. It was designated a national historic site in 1923 (Taisho 12). The rare species of luminous moss that grows naturally in a hole at the bottom of the slope is designated as a natural monument and is protected. It is about a 20-minute walk from Higashimatsuyama Station on the Tobu Tojo Line.
