geotectonics

...general term for the internal shape of the Earth's rocks and strata, which, once formed, are transformed by movements, rotations, deformations, destruction, and other actions that change their original position, arrangement, and relative positions. It includes structures of all sizes, from outcrops that can be directly observed by humans to structures on a global scale, but when discussing the structure of the Japanese archipelago in general terms, the term geotectonics is also used. The movements that formed geological structures are called tectonic movements, and depending on the characteristics of the resulting structures, they are called folding, faulting, mountain building, land building, basin building, etc.
