Japanese: 心係数 - しんけいすう（英語表記）cardiac index

This refers to the minute blood flow output of the heart per square meter of body surface area. The heart acts as a pump for the circulatory system, continuously and rhythmically pumping blood. The volume of blood output per beat is called stroke volume, and the product of this and the heart rate is the volume of blood output per minute, or cardiac output. To eliminate individual differences resulting from differences in body size and shape, the cardiac index is calculated by dividing cardiac output by body surface area. Cardiac output is about 5 l/min in an adult at rest, and increases to 30 l/min when active.

体表面積1m2当りの心臓の毎分血流拍出量をいう。心臓は循環系のポンプとしてたえ間なく律動的に血液を拍出しつづける。1回の拍動当りの拍出量は1回拍出量stroke volumeであり，これと心拍数の積が毎分当りの拍出量，心拍出量cardiac outputである。身体の大きさや形の差から生ずる個人差を除くために，心拍出量を体表面積で除したものが心係数である。心拍出量は安静時の成人で約5l/minであり，活動状態では30l/minにも増大する。
