This refers to rocks that contain a lot of mafic minerals (rich in iron and magnesium), and is often used in reference to igneous rocks. It is also called mafic rock. It refers to rocks that contain about 40 to 70% mafic minerals. Even in the case of amorphous rocks, those that are rich in mafic components, such as normative femic minerals, are called mafic rocks. Mafic rocks are often used almost synonymously with basic rocks in the classification of rocks based on SiO2 content. The main mafic fine-grained igneous rocks (volcanic rocks) are basalt and basanite, the main medium-grained igneous rocks are dolerite, and the main coarse-grained igneous rocks are gabbro.
