An evergreen, semi-parasitic woody plant of the family Mistletoe (illustration). The branches and undersides of the leaves are densely covered with brown hairs. The leaves are slightly opposite, broadly ovate, entire, and the inflorescence bears 2-7 flowers. The flowers bloom in late autumn, are tubular with a swollen lower part, about 3 cm long, and the tip is divided into four parts, recurved, covered with reddish-brown hairs on the outside but hairless on the inside. They are distributed in Honshu (west of Kanto), China, Kyushu, the Ryukyu Islands, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, and mainland China, and parasitize evergreen broad-leaved trees. The Japanese blue thrush T. kaempferi (DC.) Danser is smaller and fleshier, with glabrous leaves except for the undersides of young leaves, and produces red-pink flowers in summer and ripened red fruits in winter.
