Born: Around 1484 in Bern
Died around 1530. Bernese Swiss painter, poet and politician. Sometimes called Nikolaus Deutsch. He trained under H. Fries and Burgkmair, and participated in battles in Northern Italy as a mercenary in 1516 and 1522. From 1522 to 1526 he published anti-clerical works and plays such as Vom Papst und seiner Priesterschaft (1523) (The Pope and His Priests), and from 1528 he was active as a fighter for the Reformation in the Bern City Council. His works include the Dance of Death in the Bern Abbey Chapel (18, Basel Kunstmuseum) and The Judgement of Paris (23-25, same). His main work is Der Ablasskrämer (26) (The Merchant of Indulgences).
