A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds from Europe to northern China, and migrates to North Africa, India, southern China, and other areas in winter. It is a rare winter bird in Japan, living on the broad tidal flats of the coast. It can be seen regularly in the Ariake Sea off Kyushu, but is now extremely rare outside Kyushu. It feeds on crustaceans and mollusks on the tidal flats at low tide. It stretches its neck and holds its beak perpendicular to the ground when eating, making it more similar to geese than ducks. Unlike other ducks, it builds its nests in holes in the ground that are used by hares and foxes, or that are natural. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
