Manuel I - Manuel
King of Portugal (reigned 1495-1521). He dispatched Vasco da Gama, Albuquerque and others to develop new colonies, ushering in a golden age for the kingdom. He promoted centralization, established an absolute monarchy, and forced the Jews to convert and oppressed them.
