It means audio using digital technology and digital devices. In general, it refers to digital audio discs (abbreviated as DAD; compact discs (CD) and minidiscs (MD) are also types of DAD) and their playback systems, PCM recorders, recordable and playable discs such as minidiscs, the technology that uses them, and even listening to the playback sound. Digital audio discs are new discs that incorporate digital technology, and are expected to replace conventional records because of the high quality of the sound they reproduce.

ディジタル技術やディジタル機器を用いたオーディオという意味。一般には，ディジタルオーディオディスクdigital audio disc(DADと略する。コンパクトディスクCD，ミニディスクMDもDADの一種)およびその再生システム，PCM録音機，ミニディスクなどの録音再生可能なディスク，およびそれらを利用する技術，さらにその再生音を聴くことなどをいう。　ディジタルオーディオディスクは，ディジタル技術を導入した新しいディスク(円盤)で，再生される音の品質もよく従来のレコードに代わるものと期待されている。
