A group of volcanic islands in American Samoa in the South Pacific. It consists of the islands of Ta'u, Olosega, and Ofu. Its total area is 57 km2 and its population is 1,700 (1980). The main island is Ta'u (area 44 km2, population 1,300), which has a mountain about 1,000 m above sea level. Blessed with fertile soil, the islanders cultivate taro, breadfruit, bananas, and coconuts, and earn cash income by producing and selling copra extracted from coconuts.
