Fish fertilizer

Japanese: 魚肥 - ぎょひ

Organic fertilizers made from processed fish. They include dried fish meal, fish meal, and coarse meal. In the past, dried sardines and fish meal were the main types. Fish meal is made by steaming and squeezing fish to remove oil and moisture, and is often a by-product of fish oil production. Coarse meal is made from waste materials from seafood processing (organs, heads, etc.). Fish fertilizer is low in potassium but rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, and was traded in Japan from the early Edo period as the first commercially available fertilizer. Currently, production is limited and it is relatively expensive, so it is used for some horticultural crops and is often mixed into chemical fertilizers.

魚類を加工した有機質肥料。干し魚粉，魚かす，荒かすなどがある。かつてはほしか（干鰯）と〆かすが主であった。魚かすは魚を蒸し煮，圧搾し，油や水分を除いたもので，魚油生産の副産物であることが多い。荒かすは水産物加工の廃棄物（内臓，頭部など）を原料とするもの。魚肥はカリウムは乏しいが，リン酸，窒素に富み，日本における最初の販売肥料として江戸初期より取引された。現在は生産量がまとまらず，比較的高価なため，一部園芸作物に用いられるほか，化学肥料に配合されることが多い。
