A seedless fruit produced by parthenocarpy. Generally, fruit development proceeds in tandem with the development of the seeds, but the phenomenon in which fruit develops without the development of seeds is called parthenocarpy, and results in a seedless fruit. This indicates that although the stimulation of pollination is necessary for fruit development, the formation of seeds is not necessarily required, and examples of this can be seen in natural conditions in bananas, pineapples, satsuma mandarins, and persimmons. There are two methods for artificially producing seedless fruits: cross breeding and growth hormone treatment. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
