A family that wielded power in Nicaragua's political and financial circles. Anastasio Somoza García (1896-1956) was born into a wealthy plantation owner family. As a politician, he took control of the military and staged a coup in 1936, laying the foundations for the Somoza family's long dictatorship. Although he stepped down as president in 1947, he ruled the country as a de facto dictator and amassed vast amounts of wealth. He was assassinated in 1956. His son, Luis Somoza Debayle (1922-67), became president in 1957, and even after stepping down in 1963, he continued to appoint friends of the Somoza family to successive presidential positions, effectively maintaining control over Nicaragua's political and economic systems.

ニカラグアの政･財界で勢力をふるった一家。ソモサAnastasio Somoza García(1896‐1956)は，豊かな農園主の家に生まれ，政治家として軍隊を掌握して，1936年にクーデタを起こし，ソモサ家の長期独裁の基礎を築いた。47年には大統領を辞任したが，事実上の独裁者として同国に君臨し，巨額の富を築き上げた。56年に暗殺される。その息子のソモサLuis Somoza Debayle(1922‐67)は，57年に大統領となり，63年に退任したあとも，ソモサ家の友人を次々に大統領につけ，ニカラグアの実質的な政治的･経済的支配を継続した。
