A Philippine newspaper. An English-language daily founded in 1898 by American T. Gowan, it was one of the leading newspapers in Southeast Asia along with The Times of India. It focused on international news and economic articles, and advocated neutrality, but was affiliated with the Nationalist Party. It boasted a circulation of over 200,000 copies until martial law was imposed in 1972, when media activities in the country were halted. While other papers have been revived under the same name, The Manila Times was confiscated and disappeared. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
