〘Noun〙 A woody herb of the Musaceae family. Native to the Philippine Islands, it is widely cultivated as a fiber crop in tropical regions. It grows to a height of 6-7 meters and closely resembles a banana. The stem is a pseudostem formed by closely overlapping leaf sheaths. The leaves are oblong. The flowers grow singly in spikes. The fiber extracted from the leaves is strong, light, and highly water-resistant, so it is mainly used for ropes for ships. *Tokyo Asahi Shimbun - May 26, 1907 (Meiji 40) "The raw material we use is also Manila hemp" Source: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
