…French composer, organist and violinist. The most important member of a line of leading French musicians that continued for over 250 years, he was called "Grand Couperin" or "Francois II" to distinguish him from his uncle of the same name, Francois I (c. 1631-1708-12). Francois was born in the lodgings of the church of Saint-Gervais, where his father, Charles II C. (1638-79), was the organist, and he received organ lessons from his father from an early age. When his father died, he was already selected as the successor to the church of Saint-Gervais at the age of 11, but because he was too young, MR Delalande took over the job, and four years later, in 1683, he became the unofficial organist of the church. …
