Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation

Japanese: 日本専売公社 - にほんせんばいこうしゃ

A public law corporation that is responsible for the sound and efficient operation of the national monopoly business based on the Tobacco Monopoly Law (Law No. 111 of 1949) and the former Salt Monopoly Law (Law No. 112 of 1949). Japan's monopoly business began with the tobacco leaf monopoly in 1898, and for a long time it was run as a direct government business. However, with the enforcement of the Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation Law (Law No. 255 of 1948), the Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation was established in June 1949 to take over the business of the Monopoly Bureau of the Ministry of Finance. In April 1985, it was privatized as Japan Tobacco Inc., and became a special company with a monopoly on tobacco manufacturing and a monopoly on salt.

たばこ専売法 (昭和 24年法律 111号) ，旧塩専売法 (昭和 24年法律 112号) などに基づいて国の専売事業の健全にして能率的な実施にあたる公法上の法人。日本の専売事業は 1898年の葉たばこ専売に始り，長い間国の直営事業として経営されてきたが，日本専売公社法 (昭和 23年法律 255号) の施行に伴い，1949年6月，大蔵省専売局の事業を引継いで設立された。 85年4月「日本たばこ産業株式会社」として民営化され，たばこ製造の独占権をもち，塩の専売も扱う特殊会社となった。
