A type of sugegasa (a straw hat). It was so named because it was first used by Sandohikyaku (three-way couriers) around the time of the Jokyo era (1684-88). It is shaped like a bun and is designed to cover the face deeply, which is said to prevent injury to the face if one falls off a horse, and to protect against the winds of the four seasons. Before the Bunka era (1804-18), it was mainly used by traveling merchants as a hat for travel, but after that it gradually fell out of use, and mortar-shaped sugegasa came to be used, with Sandohikyaku only being used by the chief courier.
