It is an echinoderm of the Holothuriana family. It is found throughout Japan, living in shallow waters from the intertidal zone to depths of about 30m. It is cylindrical, with a body length of 20-30cm and a width of 6-8cm. There are variations in body color, and those that live on rocky reefs in the open ocean have light and dark brown and chestnut markings and are commonly called akako. Those that live on the sandy and muddy bottoms of inland bays and are dark blue-green to blackish are called aoko, and those that are extremely black are called kuroko. From the back to the sides, there are approximately six vertical rows of large and small conical warty feet. The ventral surface is reddish, and the tube feet are densely arranged in three vertical bands. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
