War of Spanish Succession

A war between France and Spain, Britain, Austria, and the Netherlands, which took place from 1701 to 1714. In 1700, King Charles II of Spain died, but as he had no children, he appointed Philippe of Anjou, the grandson of King Louis XIV of France, as his successor, and he ascended to the throne as Philip V. In response, Britain, the Netherlands, and Austria, which claimed the right to the Spanish throne, allied and declared war on France, as they opposed the alliance between France and Spain in order to secure maritime trade, especially trade with the New World. At the beginning of the war, France was in the lead, but after Prince Eugene of Austria defeated the French army in Italy, in 1704 he and the British Duke of Marlborough defeated the combined French and Bavarian forces at the Battle of Blenheim, turning the tide of the war. The army of Archduke Charles of Austria, which had landed on the Iberian Peninsula, also entered Madrid in 1706. Furthermore, Prince Eugene and the Duke of Marlborough won victories in Italy and the Netherlands respectively that same year, and then dealt a devastating blow to France at the Battle of Oudenarde in 1808. Meanwhile, at sea, an English and Dutch fleet defeated a French and Spanish fleet off the coast of Portugal and occupied Gibraltar in 1804.

Seeing the superiority of the allied forces, Louis XIV also decided to make peace, but the terms could not be compromised, and the peace agreement broke down, and the war continued. After that, France temporarily recovered its strength, but generally remained on the defensive. However, the domestic situation of the allied countries changed, with the Tory government replacing the Whig government in Britain, and Joseph I dying in Austria being succeeded by Charles VI, and so there were signs of an end to the war. Negotiations between Britain and France in 1711 led to the Treaty of Utrecht being concluded in 1713. Austria continued the war after that, but this also came to an end with the Treaty of Rustatt the following year. In parallel with this war, Queen Anne's War was fought in the New World.

1701～14年にかけてのフランス、スペインとイギリス、オーストリア、オランダとの間の戦争。1700年にスペイン王カルロス2世が没したが、王には子がなかったので、フランス王ルイ14世の孫フィリップ・ダンジューを後継者に指名し、彼がフェリペ5世として即位した。これに対し海上貿易、とくに新大陸貿易確保の観点から、フランスとスペインとの提携に反対する、イギリス、オランダ、およびスペイン王位継承権を主張するオーストリアの三国は、同盟を結んで対抗し、宣戦した。開戦当初は、フランスが優勢であったが、オーストリアのオイゲン公がイタリアでフランス軍を破ったのち、04年同公とイギリスのマールバラ公が、ブレナムの戦いでフランス・バイエルン連合軍を撃破し、戦局を転換した。イベリア半島に上陸したオーストリアのカール大公の軍も、06年マドリードに入城した。さらに、オイゲン公とマールバラ公は同年それぞれイタリアとネーデルラントで勝利を収めたのち、08年にはウーデナルドの戦いでフランスに大打撃を与えた。一方、海上でも、イギリス、オランダ艦隊はポルトガル沿海でフランス、スペイン艦隊を破り、04年ジブラルタルを占領した。

　こうした同盟軍の優勢をみて、ルイ14世も講和を決意したが、その条件について妥協がならなかったため決裂し、戦争は続行された。その後もフランスは、一時戦勢を回復したものの一般的には振るわず、守勢であった。しかし、イギリスでホイッグ党内閣にかわってトーリー党内閣が成立し、オーストリアではヨーゼフ1世が死去してカール6世が即位するなどの同盟諸国の国内情勢の変化により、戦争終結への機運が兆し、1711年イギリスとフランスの交渉をきっかけに、13年ユトレヒト条約の締結となった。その後もオーストリアは戦争を継続したが、これも翌年のラスタット条約で終わりを告げた。なお、この戦争と並行して新大陸ではアン女王戦争が戦われた。
