Maniai paper

Japanese: 間似合紙 - まにあいがみ

A type of ganpishi paper, it was used for sliding doors and also as paper for writing and painting. The name is said to come from the fact that it fits seamlessly across the width of a sliding door (3 shaku, or about 90 cm), and has appeared since the Kamakura period (first appearing in the Gion Shiyugyō Diary, entry for 1278, Kenji 4). It was also used as paper for wall paintings in the Middle Ages. In the Edo period, Echizen paper (Imadate-cho, Imadate-gun, Fukui Prefecture) and Nashio paper (Nashio, Shiose-cho, Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture) were by far the leading producers of mania paper.

雁皮紙（がんぴし）の一種で，襖紙（ふすまがみ）としてはられるとともに，書画用紙としても使われた。名称の由来は，襖の半間の幅(3尺。約90cm)に継目なしにはるのに，間に合うの意味といわれ，鎌倉時代から現れてくる(初出は《祇園執行（ぎおんしゆぎよう）日記》建治4年(1278)の条)。中世の障壁画の用紙としても使われている。江戸時代の間似合紙の産地としては，越前紙(福井県今立郡今立町)と名塩紙(兵庫県西宮市塩瀬町名塩)が群を抜いた存在であった。
