[Died] December 16, 999. Second wife of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I of Alsace. Saint. Daughter of Burgundian King Rudolf II, she was first married to King Lothair of Italy, and their daughter Emma became the wife of King Lothair of France. With her international blood ties, high education, and political insight, she was welcomed as Otto's wife in 951 and assisted him in politics, but when his son became emperor as Otto II, she lost her influence at court to Theophano, the Byzantine princess who was the wife of Otto II. After the death of Otto II, she reconciled with Theophano and served as regent for the young new emperor Otto III. After coming of age (995), she retired to the Abbey of Selz in Lower Alsace, where she devoted herself to establishing churches and monasteries.
