An insect of the Hemiptera family, Cicadaidae. It is also called Matsuzemi or Matsumushi because it lives exclusively on pine trees. As its name suggests, it is the earliest to appear in mainland Japan, in the spring. It is a small cicada, with a body length of 26-31 mm for males and 22-26 mm for females, and the forewing span is 61-67 mm. While the male's body is uniformly black, the female has a brown background with black markings. The wings are transparent, with black to brown veins. The male's abdomen is long and slender, with a wide resonance chamber and white powder on the tip of the abdomen. The female's ovipositor protrudes from the tip of the abdomen. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Chugoku, and is mainly found in pine forests on flat land.
