…In the first half of the 19th century, especially in Germany, interest in local history increased dramatically as the trend of romanticism awakened the historical consciousness of the people, and by the end of the century, historical societies were organized in every state and major city. In 1906, Rudolf Kötzschke (1867-1949) established the "Laboratory for the Study of State and Settlement History" at the University of Leipzig, which was the first specialized local history research institute in Europe. After that, the establishment of this type of research facility did not progress very much, but after World War II, the methodological importance of regional history research became strongly recognized in European countries, and many universities began to establish specialized institutes for this purpose. …
