A modern drama actor from the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture). His real name was Yogen. He was the son of calligrapher Naoyasu and Kazu. He graduated from the humanities department of Tokyo Senmon Gakko (Waseda University). While at school, he participated in the recitation study group started by Tsubouchi Shoyo. After joining the Chuo Shimbun newspaper, he became a theater critic. In 1901, he accompanied Kawakami Otojiro's troupe on its European tour. In 1903, he translated an abridged version of The Merchant of Venice for Kawakami. After the Literary Arts Association was founded in 1906, he taught at the affiliated theatrical research institute and also performed on stage, performing Hideyori and Shigenari from Shoyo's works, as well as Shakespeare's Portia and Hamlet, and was highly praised for his delivery of lines that were likened to "wonderful music." After the association was dissolved in 1913, he founded the Mumei-kai with Togi Tetsuki, but retired due to illness after performing Hiun Shonin in Miracle. His books include the play "Hideko Kaburagi," an adaptation of "Hedda Gabler."
