His given name was Yoshinobu, his pen name was Hakuju, and his other names included Ichiyosai, Baigaku, Sokenken, and Sansei. He was commonly known as Nuidonosuke. He was from Kyoto. He was the eldest son of Kano Sansetsu. It is said that he first learned painting from his father, and later followed Kano Yasunobu. His representative works include "Kamo Horse Racing Screen" (Tokyo National Museum) and "Four Seasons of Flowers and Birds Screen" (Boston Museum of Fine Arts). He inherited the scholarly spirit of his father, and in addition to his painting career, he devoted himself to studying old paintings and was also well versed in forensic analysis. In 1693, he published "Honcho Ga-shi" (Honcho Painting History), in five volumes. This was completed after the posthumous manuscript of Sansetsu, who had planned to compile the first comprehensive artist biography in Japan, and it is one of the important basic materials for the study of the history of Japanese painting. He died at the age of 67 and was buried at Sennyuji Temple in Kyoto. <References> Tsuguyoshi Doi, "Study of Early Modern Japanese Paintings"; Satoru Sakakibara, "The Transformation of Kano" (Ko-bijutsu, No. 96) (Motoaki Kono) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
