A town in Soraku County in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture. It has long been a strategic location connecting the Kyoto and Ueno basins, and the Kansai Main Line runs along the Kizu River, which flows west through the central area. The area is mountainous, and shiitake mushrooms and cucumbers are local specialties. Mount Kasagi (historic site and scenic spot), rich in historical sites such as the former residence of Emperor Godaigo, is a popular tourist destination. Area: 23.52 km2 . Population: 1,626 (2010).
