Sensui Island

A small island in Tomonoura, Fukuyama City, southeastern Hiroshima Prefecture. Its area is 0.92 square kilometers. Its highest point is 159 meters. The geology is that of rhyolite formed in the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era, sandwiched between layers of shale and sandstone called the Sensui Formation. It is one of the important bases of the Setonaikai National Park, with its spectacular views of the seven bays and seven lakes and sea caves. The sea caves, Sensui Formation and dikes are prefectural natural monuments. Many people visit the island throughout the year, for fishing for sea bream in spring, swimming in the sea in summer, and viewing the autumn leaves. There is a promenade on the island. It is about a five-minute ferry ride from Tomo. There is a public lodging facility, but according to the 2000 census, there are no permanent residents.

広島県南東部、福山市の鞆の浦(とものうら)にある小島。面積0.92平方キロメートル。最高点は159メートル。地質は、中生代白亜紀に形成された流紋岩が仙酔層とよばれる頁(けつ)岩・砂岩層を挟む。七浦七湖の絶景や海食洞がみられ、瀬戸内海国立公園の重要な拠点の一つである。海食洞窟(どうくつ)、仙酔層と岩脈は県の天然記念物。春のタイ網、夏の海水浴、秋の紅葉と四季を通じて訪れる人が多い。島内には遊歩道がある。鞆から渡船で約5分。国民宿舎があるが、2000年（平成12）の国勢調査では、定住者はいない。
