1838‐93 Polish painter. Born in Krakow. Studied at the academies in Munich and Vienna from 1858, returning to Poland in 1860. He established his reputation with Skarga's Sermon, which won the gold medal at the Salon in Paris in 1864. He left behind many large-scale, realistic historical paintings on the theme of major historical events and battles in his country. His paintings often feature figures with dramatic gestures and strong emotional expressions, and he sometimes paints critically, likening them to the political situation of the time. He became the director of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts in 1873. He also traveled domestically and abroad, and became a member of academicians in various parts of Europe.
