Sado Road - Sado-ji

Japanese: 佐渡路 - さどじ

During the Edo period, this highway connected Edo and Sado. It was important as a route for transporting gold and silver from the Sado Gold Mine, which was under the direct control of the shogunate. There were three roads: Hokkoku Kaido, which branches off from Oiwake-juku on the Nakasendo and heads to Izumozaki; Mikuni Kaido, which branches off from Takasaki-juku on the Nakasendo and heads to Teradomari; and Aizu Kaido, which branches off at Nakashirakawa on the Oshu Road and heads to Niigata. Izumozaki, Teradomari, and Niigata were the ferry points. Of these, Sado's gold was transported from Ogi Port via Izumozaki via the Hokkoku Kaido, and a succession system had been established.

江戸時代，江戸と佐渡を結んだ街道。幕府直轄の佐渡金山からの金銀輸送路として重視された。中山道(なかせんどう)追分(おいわけ)宿から分かれて出雲崎(いずもざき)に出る北国(ほっこく)街道，中仙道高崎宿から分かれて寺宿(てらどまり)に出る三国(みくに)街道，奥州道中白河で分かれて新潟に出る会津街道の３道があって，出雲崎・寺泊・新潟が渡海場であった。このうち佐渡の御金荷は小木(おぎ)港から出雲崎を経て北国街道を輸送され，継立体制も確立していた。
