Matisse

Japanese: マティス
Matisse
French painter. Born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France. In 1893, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) in Paris, where he studied under Moreau along with Marquet and Rouault. He initially showed an academic style, but was influenced by Impressionism around 1897. Eventually, his colors became more intense and his forms simplified, and his works exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 were criticized for being labeled Fauves (wild beasts) along with those of Derain and Vlaminck. He subsequently promoted Fauvism, making use of primary colors, rejecting fleshiness and moving in the direction of realizing arabesque lines, and establishing a clear style of painting in which the subject was boldly simplified and decorated. Around the time of World War II, he lived in Vence in the south of France, where he worked on papercutting, and also designed the chapel of a monastery there, producing murals and stained glass for it.
