1807‐77 An enlightened politician in the late Yi Dynasty of Korea. Born in Pannam. His pen names were Hwangyong and Hwangyong, and his pen names were Hwanjae and Hwanjae. His grandfather was Pak Jiwon, a Practical Scholar. He passed the examination for the Joseon Dynasty in 1848, and served as Minister of Rites, Minister of State for Pyeongan Affairs, and Right Councillor. He was especially valued after King Gojong ascended to the throne in 1864, and actively supported the domestic and foreign policies of Daewongun's government, such as the reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Sherman Incident (1866, the Western Expedition). However, after the Shinmi Expedition in 1871, he opposed Daewongun's policy of isolation and expulsion of foreigners, and after Daewongun resigned (1873), he actively advocated the restoration of diplomatic relations with Japan after the Meiji Restoration.
