Spanish novelist. He went into exile in Paris in 1956. His breakthrough work, Sorrows of Heaven (1955), depicted the anxiety of a generation that grew up during the civil war, and his subsequent works objectively recorded the misery of workers and the decadence of the bourgeoisie, and attempted social change. However, in his representative trilogy, Identification (1966), Restoration of Count Don Julián (1970), and Rootless Juan (1975), he turned to experimental novels that made full use of his imagination and stylistic techniques. His other works include Maqbara (1980), which shows sympathy for the Arab world, and his autobiography, The Prohibited Zone (1985).

スペインの小説家。1956年パリに亡命した。出世作《天国の悲しみ》（1955年）では，内戦の最中に育った世代の不安を描き，続く諸作では労働者の悲惨さやブルジョワの退廃を客観的に記録し社会変革を企てたが，代表的三部作《身元証明》（1966年）《ドン・フリアン伯爵の復権》（1970年）《根なしのフアン》（1975年）に至り，想像力や文体上の技法を駆使した実験小説に転じた。他には，アラブ世界への共感を示した《マクバラ》（1980年）や自伝《禁猟区》（1985年）などがある。
