German film director, actor, and photographer. Born in Berlin, he studied painting and dance. Although he established his reputation as a dancer, he made his film debut in 1926 with The Holy Mountain. He starred in a series of mountaineering films, and directed and starred in Blue Light (1932). During the Hitler era, he directed Triumph of the Will (1935), a documentary about the Nazi Party rally, and Olympia, a two-part documentary about the Berlin Olympics, Festival of the People and Festival of Beauty (1938). His outstanding cinematography and rhythmic editing drew worldwide attention. After World War II, he was imprisoned on charges of Nazi propaganda, but was found not guilty. After the war, he completed only Low Countries (1954), and his filmmaking stagnated, but he continued to work as a first-class photographer. He also published photo books about indigenous African people, Nuba (1973) and Kau Nuba (1976), as well as books about Africa. She began taking underwater photographs in 1974, and published an underwater photo book called "Underwater Wonders" (1990), among others. She also wrote an autobiography called "Recollections" (1987). In 2002, "Wonder Under Water: Primary Colors" was her first new film in 48 years to feature footage from diving. In 1993, a German-Belgian co-production called "Leni" (directed by Ray Muller) was made. In 1996, the dance theater "Rifenstahl" was performed at the Schauspielhaus in Cologne. She visited Japan in 1980 (Showa 55).

ドイツの映画監督、俳優、写真家。ベルリンに生まれ、絵画と舞踏を学ぶ。舞踏家として名声を確立するが、1926年『聖山』で映画女優としてデビュー。一連の山岳映画に主演し、『青の光』（1932）を監督・主演する。ヒトラー政権時代に、ナチ党大会記録映画『意志の勝利』（1935）、ベルリン・オリンピックの記録映画『オリンピア』二部作『民族の祭典』『美の祭典』（1938）を監督、傑出した撮影技術とリズミカルな編集により、世界の注目を浴びる。第二次世界大戦後ナチ宣伝の容疑で投獄されるが無罪となる。戦後は『低地』（1954）のみを完成、映画製作は停滞化するが、その後第一級の写真家として活躍。アフリカの先住民を撮った写真集『ヌバ』（1973）、『カウ・ヌバ』（1976）ほか、アフリカ関係の著書も出す。1974年から潜水撮影を始め、水中写真集『水中の驚異』（1990）などを出版。このほか、自叙伝『回想』（1987）がある。また、2002年発表の『ワンダー・アンダー・ウォーター　原色の海』はダイビングによる映像を収めた48年ぶりの新作映画である。1993年には、ドイツ・ベルギーの合作でドキュメンタリー映画『レニ』（レイ・ミュラー監督）が製作された。1996年ケルン市のシャウシュピールハウスでダンスシアター『リーフェンシュタール』が上演された。1980年（昭和55）に来日している。
