A city in the center of Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the entire eastern slope of Mt. Haruna, with the western part being hilly, the central and eastern part being lowlands along the Agatsuma and Tone rivers, and the northern part being mountainous at the southern foot of Mt. Komochi. The city center developed as a post station on the Mikuni Kaido road in the early modern period and as a market town. It is the junction of the Joetsu and Agatsuma lines, and the Kan'etsu Expressway was opened in 1985. It is home to Mt. Haruna and Ikaho Onsen, and is the entrance to Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park. Taking advantage of the abundant water and electricity, chemical and steel industries, local lumber industries, and block manufacturing using pumice as a raw material have been carried out since before World War II. The surrounding area produces rice, wheat, apples, and konjac, and sericulture is also carried out. In February 2006, the city incorporated Kitatachibana Village and Akagi Village in Seta District, and Ikaho Town, Komochi Village, and Onokami Village in Kitagunma District. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city. The area was 240.27 km2 . The population was 83,330 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
