Ranjatai - Ranjatai

Aromatic wood handed down in the Shosoin Nakakura. It is said to have been named Ranjatai by Emperor Shomu. As the name of Todaiji Temple is included in the inscription, it is also known as Todaiji Temple and Ojukuko. It is considered the most famous of the six types of famous fragrances, and is considered a rare treasure in the art of incense, and in monkou (smelling incense), it is said to be a ritual to smell it ten times. The story of Ashikaga Yoshimasa, Oda Nobunaga, and others cutting this aloeswood is well known, and Emperor Ogimachi wrote a song about it, "The fragrance of the sacred era." A small piece bestowed by Nobunaga was donated to Sennyuji Temple in Kyoto and Ichinomiya in Owari, and Sen no Rikyu was also a listener of this incense.

正倉院中倉に伝世する香木。聖武(しょうむ)天皇によって蘭奢待と命名されたと伝わる。銘文中に東大寺の名が含まれるところから、別名東大寺、また黄熟香(おうじゅくこう)とも称する。名香六一種のうち第一の名香として、香道では奇宝とし、聞香(もんこう)では返し十度の作法を伝える。足利義政(あしかがよしまさ)、織田信長らが、この沈香(じんこう)を切り取った話は有名で、また正親町(おおぎまち)天皇は「聖代の余薫」と歌った。信長に下賜された小片は京都・泉涌(せんにゅう)寺と尾張一宮(おわりいちのみや)に寄進され、千利休(せんのりきゅう)も、この香の聞香者である。
