Born: January 10, 1874, Labruyère, Haute-Saône
Died February 26, 1932. French historian. Graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School) in Paris in 1897. From 1908, he lectured on the history of the French Revolution at the universities of Nancy, Lille, Besançon, and Dijon, and in 1926 became a professor at the Sorbonne. Influenced by the socialist J. Jaurès, he debated with his teacher F. Aulard and tried to give a fair historical evaluation of M. Robespierre. In 1908, he organized the Society for Robespierre Studies and published its journal, Annales de la Révolution (retitled Annales de la Révolution in 1924), which presented many new perspectives on the history of the revolution. His major works include Études robespierristes (Studies on Robespierre) (17-18), La Révolution française (The French Revolution) (3 volumes, 22-27), and La Vie chère et le mouvement social sous la Terreur (26).
