Japanese: モツゴ(持子) - モツゴ（英語表記）Pseudorasbora parva

A freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family (illustration). It is also called Ishimoroko (along the shores of Lake Biwa), Kuchiboso (Tokyo), and Oboso (along the shores of Lake Kasumigaura). The Japanese name Motsugo comes from a dialect of Kochi Prefecture. It is naturally distributed throughout Japan, Taiwan, the Korean peninsula, and the eastern Asian continent from Primorsky Krai to southern China. In Japan, it is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of the Kanto region, but recently it has also begun breeding in parts of the Tohoku region and Hokkaido. It has also been recorded breeding in Romania in Eastern Europe since around 1960, but this is thought to be due to transplantation from Asian regions.

コイ目コイ科の淡水魚（イラスト）。イシモロコ(琵琶湖沿岸)，クチボソ(東京)，オボソ(霞ヶ浦沿岸)などとも呼ばれる。和名のモツゴは高知県の方言に由来。自然分布は日本，台湾，朝鮮半島および沿海州から華南までのアジア大陸東部一帯。日本での分布は関東以西の本州，四国および九州であったが，最近では東北地方や北海道の一部にも繁殖している。また東欧のルーマニアでも1960年ころより繁殖が記録されているが，これはアジア地域からの移殖によると思われる。
