Also called an indirect flame furnace. A furnace with a partition (muffle) made of refractory material with good thermal conductivity between the heat source or heating element and the firing chamber. Without a muffle, thermal efficiency is better and the operating temperature can be higher, but problems such as the material being sintered becoming dirty, the atmosphere inside the furnace changing, and the heating element being damaged can occur. As a countermeasure, the material to be sintered is generally placed in a sagger before firing, but when this is not sufficient, a muffle furnace is used. This furnace is essential for firing ceramics, such as electronic ceramics and new ceramics, whose functions must be precisely controlled.
